Prompts

  1. SNOW BLIND - It's snowing, a lot, and pristine landscape though it might create, it also brings plenty of problems, especially when you live in an Edwardian-style village with a serious lack of snow shovels. It's currently blizzard conditions and visibility is nil — Maybe you gave in and ducked into the nearest house for temporary shelter, and discover someone else had the same idea (or just lives there, oops). Maybe you're stubborn enough to still be out in it, struggling against the wind and snow. Or maybe you've tromped into the South Village Inn like a human popsicle, and are just hoping you don't lose any fingers before you make it to the fireplace.

  2. JUMPED-UP - Winter's here, which means it's the perfect time for an expedition to warmer, southern climes. You've joined a group following the river all the way down to the far southern beach, for fun and for science. On this latest break in your journey, you've spotted a large, jewel-colored feather and picked it up, maybe as a specimen to bring back or just a feather for your cap. Turns out it's an archaeopteryx feather, and you're now, well... let's call it a little gravity-challenged. Not a bad benefit once you figure out how to control it.

  3. COLD CALL - The snow has slacked off, leaving behind a winter wonderland. Sure, there's plenty to do, but after being cooped up inside for days, most people won't blame you for a morale-booster — That is, unless your way of starting a snowball fight is to pop up and throw them at unsuspecting passers-by. Making a snow man or snow angels might come with a little less retribution, but you do you.

  4. WILDCARD - Choose your own adventure. Maybe play powers roulette.

Snow blind

Fortunately, North won't be driven to breaking in, because it only takes til the third knock for Simon to reach the door, tugging it open and looking out warily. He wasn't expecting any company today, especially with the way the wind's been howling around the corners of the house, the snow piling up on every windowsill, and his nerves are already tightly strung. But all traces of suspicion disappear upon seeing the state the man on his doorstep's in, and instead concern and smooth competence kick in as he reaches out to offer an arm to help him inside.

"Come on. I'll get some blankets and tea. Nobody should be out in this without the proper gear. Are you experiencing any dizziness or having any trouble breathing?"

Because on a day like this, hypothermia is a real concern, and whoever this is, Simon's not going to leave him out there to die. He might be stuck on this backwater hole of a planet, but he's still a doctor. He took an oath to save lives, wherever he could.

"Well, now that you mention it..." North says, letting himself take that arm and be herded inside. Questions can wait, for right now he mostly just wants warmth. And damn if it isn't warm in the house. How wonderful. "A bit dizzy now that I can feel the warmth in here."

At least the warmth is lovely. Blankets and tea would also be nice. He's a damn long way from home, any home he's ever known, and right now, the little comforts of childhood matter. Is it okay to sit down here? Just... you know, right here inside the door, seeing as the world is spinning?

"Hey hey, here, easy--"

Oh. Oh no, that's not good at all. Simon manages to get an arm underneath North just in time to catch most of his weight, although the height difference makes it a bit dodgy for a moment. Fortunately, he's spent enough time doing this that it's not too hard to get his balance, and he helps North shuffle fully into the living room, where there's a low fire burning in the hearth, occasionally hissing when snow falls through the flue. Getting his new patient settled on the couch and making sure he isn't going to fall over in the wrong direction, Simon turns to grab a wool blanket from a nearby chair.

"Can you get your wet layers off, or do you need me to help you? You need to be dry for us to get your body temperature back up." It looks like the guy is suffering through the early stages of hypothermia. Maybe frostbite, too, he thinks, inspecting his hands. Tricky, with what little medical technology they have here, but he can manage.

"I've had to strip down through worse, Doc."

Clearly the man is some form of medical professional, and obeying those is more or less a given. They usually didn't want to hurt you, usually. More often than not, by a pretty serious margin. Which of course he could provide that data if he had... No, he'd rather not think of Theta right now. Instead he carefully twists onto one side and starts stripping himself out of his scrubs top. Clearly he's a bit used to this because soon he has both that and the tank top off. His body has more than a few scars, almost all of them bullet holes. Except for a rather nasty one that implies a bladed weapon run through just about the area of his heart.

Probably not something you normally survive.

"Might need help with the shoes."

The casual title makes Simon look up, a little startled, but then, well. He is what he is. "Is it that obvious?" Conversational, even as he focuses in on his patient, who clearly is more than a little familiar with medical personnel and procedure, given the number of bullet wounds Simon sees evidence of on his body. And that nasty-looking stab wound over his heart. He's already building a medical file in his head as he kneels in front of the couch to help get the boots off. It isn't hard, even with the snow and ice encrusted in the laces; Simon's always been good with his hands, part of why he went into surgery, and it only takes a moment before the boots are off and set in front of the fire, and the shirts are laid out in front of the same. Wrapping the wool blanket around North's bare shoulders, he tucks it securely around the man.

"Stay put. Looks like you're suffering early stages of hypothermia. We need to get your body temperature back up. I'll be right back with some tea. Stay conscious, I'm going to need to go over some questions with you."

Given the fact that North Dakota has dealt with a serious number of doctors, medics and, well, his own secondary training. So yeah, it was obvious.  “Someone that goes right to the heart of important symptoms that not everyone associates with hypothermia? You’re either from a place with a lot of hypothermia issues, or you are medically trained,” North rattles off. And lucky him, he has both. “Plus as my sister would say, you have a bad case of doctor face.” Given she hated doctors it made sense. As for him? Well he was keeping his pants on without orders otherwise. And he would obey we’re they given. He doesn’t fight medical professionals. They are useful and usually want the best for you.
