Prompts

  1. SNOW BLIND - It's snowing, a lot, and pristine landscape though it might create, it also brings plenty of problems, especially when you live in an Edwardian-style village with a serious lack of snow shovels. It's currently blizzard conditions and visibility is nil — Maybe you gave in and ducked into the nearest house for temporary shelter, and discover someone else had the same idea (or just lives there, oops). Maybe you're stubborn enough to still be out in it, struggling against the wind and snow. Or maybe you've tromped into the South Village Inn like a human popsicle, and are just hoping you don't lose any fingers before you make it to the fireplace.

  2. JUMPED-UP - Winter's here, which means it's the perfect time for an expedition to warmer, southern climes. You've joined a group following the river all the way down to the far southern beach, for fun and for science. On this latest break in your journey, you've spotted a large, jewel-colored feather and picked it up, maybe as a specimen to bring back or just a feather for your cap. Turns out it's an archaeopteryx feather, and you're now, well... let's call it a little gravity-challenged. Not a bad benefit once you figure out how to control it.

  3. COLD CALL - The snow has slacked off, leaving behind a winter wonderland. Sure, there's plenty to do, but after being cooped up inside for days, most people won't blame you for a morale-booster — That is, unless your way of starting a snowball fight is to pop up and throw them at unsuspecting passers-by. Making a snow man or snow angels might come with a little less retribution, but you do you.

  4. WILDCARD - Choose your own adventure. Maybe play powers roulette.

Snow Blind

The house blob had lights on, at least there was that to help it stand out just a touch better in the thick snow. Reeve, not even noticing the storm as he poured over his latest sketch of a needed water tower, fliched at the sound of a knock on the door. Not Brigitte it would be a lot louder because she tried to give him fair warning that he was about to get mothered. Steph just forewent the process entirely. So Reeve put down his pencil and left the sun room that had been converted into a lovely office with plenty of table space, and went for the door.

When he opened it he was shocked, more by the clear blizzard that had whipped itself up than by the stranger at his door.

"Oh my, quite a storm," he mused before he truly processed the man there. His shock turned to a softened expression of concern and he stood aside for Leonardo. "Please come in, it would be poor manners to leave you out in that. I'm glad I thought to set a fire in the fireplace earlier."

Leonardo was covered in snow and he was shivering extensively, but he still managed a grateful smile. "Grazie, I do n...not th...think I can get to the i...inn." His teeth were chattering, and he wondered if he'd been too pampered in his beautiful Italia to be ready for such a drastic change. He stepped inside but did not go far, not wanting to track the weather into Reeve's home. It would be very rude, under the circumstances. The warm clothing he couldn't do without, but his boots at least had to be left by the door. His own workshop might be a mess at all times, but he respected other people's cleanliness.

The snow in his dark hair and beard was already melting and wetting it down, and his cheeks were a very shiny red. Once he managed to get warm enough not to chatter on every other word, he spoke again, in a more cheerful and Italian accented way. "I am not used to such weather! It was not wise, but ah, it is magnificent too, nature's fierce unyielding ways, yes?" Not even nearly freezing to death in a blizzard can keep his spirit at bay, apparently. "Perdonami, forgive me for intruding on your space."

"I am more concerned about your health than an intrusion," Reeve said, putting an arm around Leonardo's shoulder to guide him to the fire. Sets him down in a comfortable chair to warm up. After that he crosses to the door to his office. Open and with the light on the sketches taped to the windows and papers everywhere from the place where Leonardo is sitting. He turns the light off but leaves the door open. Best not to waste power. Then he returned to Leonardo.

"Alright, can I get you some tea? I think I still have soup Brigitte made that I can heat up. And yes, it is wonderful outside. I really should take notes on weather patterns. I will need to account for how much melt I may have to deal with in the spring."

"Tea will be fine, thank you, I am not hungry, only cold." Leonardo doesn't settle long in the chair, feeling as if it's best to get blood flowing to his limbs. He stays by the fire, yes, but peers as best as he can at the sketches he saw. "Where did you get such paper?" It is his first thought, of course, as it's something his own fingers have been itching for. He longs for a pencil or a brush, and for late hours at his workshop, but it is not wise, dwelling on the things that cannot change. Only look forward to that which can!

"I was considering making paper and parchment myself, it is a process but when you cannot find, make, that it's what I always say!" Leonardo never says it about things that were easy for him to find, no, but it stays true regardless of what he has to make.

The paper? Reeve had been his way toward the kitchen only to pause. Wonder over paper, and the excitement in his tone. Making his own? Well, at least Reeve can help with that. He immediately turned around and walked past Leonardo and into his office. He skimmed about twenty pages off of the top of his ream and carries it back out, offering to the man.

"Here. It seems that the paper would bring you some joy, my friend. I awoke one morning in the inn and there was a cardboard box with two reams of that, a ruler, a drawing compass. I do wish I had proper drafting papers, but..."

Well, you work with what you can.

Leonardo's mouth actually dropped open, blue eyes wide, because he could not possibly mean such a generous gift! "That is very kind, but I would hate to take so much from you. I have nothing to trade for." He didn't technically own the clothes on his back at the moment, so that was out. He looked so excitedly at the paper though, at what it could mean. But what would he use it for? He couldn't use it frivolously. Only on useful sketches.

"Ah, you are an architect!" The reams, the ruler, the drafting papers, he flashed a very bright smile. "And what are you drafting?"

"I am sure that somewhere in the future there shall be some way in which you can repay me," Reeve smiled, because that happiness alone made it worth giving the gift. "I received over a thousand sheets. But I still ask you stay very careful with your use of them."

Already he was heading toward the kitchen again. But once more Leonardo said something that made him pause. Wait, someone who was interested in this? Because so far he'd barely had interest other than Malik to discuss this with. Altair had given him things to do, other people gave general specifications. But...

"At the moment we're in need of a new barn and a bridge sufficient to cross the river but also to have the strength to handle carts loaded with ore. However my materials are limited and I wont' have a long period of time to research the river's flow and the like."
