Prompts

Summer is here, villagers! Sunny skies, warm weather and plenty of weirdness are on the horizon. Don't forget your sunscreen!

  1. THE MILK FOR FREE - Somehow, someway, you have been wrangled into milking one of the GROFFLES recently rounded up by your fellow villagers. Maybe you felt guilty for not helping, or maybe you owe someone scary money. Point is, it's just you, a bucket, and your green milk-giving friend. Just a tip: Groffles are good-natured, but you probably shouldn't squeeze too hard.

  2. LIGHTNING ROD - Earlier today, you made your way into the upper foothills — Were you hunting? Maybe just roaming? — and you came into contact with a BLUE LILY. Maybe you thought it was so pretty you've carried it back to the village with you. If your house didn't have electricity before, it definitely does now!

  3. MEET CUTE - It's a classic: You've gone down into the 6I INN'S dirt-walled root cellar off the kitchen. Maybe you needed supplies or were dropping off some fresh produce. Whatever the case, someone's followed you down for a similar reason... and the door has jammed shut behind them. Seriously, it's not budging. Enjoy getting to know your new best friend in the cozy light of the furnace!

  4. WILDCARD - Choose your own adventure. Maybe play powers roulette.

the milk for free

Jean is also not a country girl so the idea of milking anything, much less a Very Weird Animal, is foreign to her. Still, she isn't the kind of person to just back down from a challenge and just when she's gotten herself prepared to do the thing, turns out that someone else is already there on the fluffy monster she'd picked for herself. Huh.

"I think the scouts give badges for farm stuff," Jean says, squinting a bit at the other girl. She looks familiar. Really familiar.

"I know this is going to sound really weird - but I think I know you. It's Ms. Marvel, right?"

Kamala nods in response to the first part. Yeah, she feels the stare on her. She lived with total creeps before so staring isn't weird to her. What is weird is having someone casually ask if you are a superhero while doing civilian stuff. Kamala turns to her like she's hearing her wrong. She must be. Her mind is playing tricks on her, right? It wouldn't be the first time since she got back from Reims.

"What?" It's about then she really looks at Jean. That recognition is mutual. She loves the X-Men. Of course she'd recognize one who stopped wearing the mask when she grew up. "Aren't you with the X-Men?!" It's not as loud as she'd usually be. Blame the horror movie she left behind. Normally she'd mess up someone's eye drums with her shouting. Instead she's a little louder than a normal talking pitch.

"I am," Jean says brightly. "Or, well, one team of them anyway. I'm not with Kitty and Logan but we do all right. I guess I should probably give you a real introduction and not just stare at you. I'm Jean Grey," she says, offering her hand to Kamala to shake.

"I didn't think I would be lucky enough to meet someone who seems to be from my version of the world. Nobody else knows who I am and while that's fine and all, I think it's good to know there's someone here who knows about home."

Kamala takes it without hesitation. She loved her adult superhero self so of course this is an honor. Actually it is a bit of a relief to actually have someone likely from her world here now that Kamala thinks about it. Most of the time people just ignored her rambly texts in Reims about things only people from her world would know. This may be the only time someone understands what on Earth she is talking about. "Wow I thought I was just seeing things. You're really her! It's super awesome to meet you."

She lets go of her hand. If this is Jean Grey, it is totally plausible she knows her. She's honestly 90% positive Wolverine does too and is too polite to say anything. She may as well ask while they're here. It's not like anyone can hurt her family in revenge or something when they're on another world. "I am Kamala Khan: noted lover of all things Carol Danvers related." She leans in even if it's totally unnecessary. "Did we team up? Because I'd be so stoked to hear that, but I honestly don't remember."

"Not yet," Jean confesses. "We had...a situation back home with symbiotes invading that you kind of helped handle along with some of the Avengers but you haven't teamed up with us yet. You're totally welcome though, any time you're in town."

Jean laughs a bit and shakes her head. "Town is Madripoor right now, so it's kind of a long trip, but that's nothing between friends, right?"

God, it's a relief to be with someone who just gets it. This village is weird in and of itself and Jean can handle weird - but it's hard to handle weird without worrying about what's going on at home.

Her heart could burst right now. She can't think of anything she wants more back home than to team up with another teenager much less a member of the X-Men. Being an implied friend definitely sweetens the deal. "Hey, I have a teleporting dog! I can swing it. He knows how to read maps." She says it like a proud parent. He isn't even her dog. Does that stop Kamala for claiming credit for him? Absolutely not. She loves Lockjaw. He is hers in spirit if nothing else.

The rest earns a thoughtful hum. "That sounds totally in character for me. Things must be bad if the Avengers needed an assist from me. I guess invasions count as bad, huh?" She scratches the back of her head and softly laughs. A moment later she drops it and gives voice to similar concerns. "I hope everything turns out okay. It probably will if only some of the Avengers are involved." Her faith in them hasn't been tested and shattered just yet.

"A teleporting dog? See, you're already better than my team. We don't have any dog - much less a teleporting one."

Jean laughs, though, because even though she'd definitely have Kamala join the X-Men for a team-up whenever she wanted, she definitely still loves her team. It just gets tiresome being with teenage boys all the time.

"I think things are going to come out ok. They don't always - I've been doing this long enough to know that - but I have faith in us."
morphogenia: (nothing is more important)

"You should get on that! They're super awesome and cuddly." Kamala notes with a bright smile. She really does miss Lockjaw. He really is a fantastic friend. It isn't the same without him. She doesn't want to bum Jean out by saying all that. She's had time to make some peace with the situation, after all.

Kamala shrugs the rest off or rather the part where not winning is a chance. Kamala doesn't like to think like that. She has the benefit of having a happier story though. She can afford to think that way. "Nothing is ever perfect, but your team is legendary even when its split up like ten different ways. You guys will do great." She offers a thumbs up. "Just know that I will totally be cheering you on wherever I am!"

"It's...so nice to hear that," Jean admits. "Sometimes I forget that there are people out there who are cheering for me and my friends, you know? Mutants aren't exactly the most loved people out there."

Maybe the X-Men have a good reputation for the most part but Jean still feels that stigma. She remembers when she tried to be "normal" for a while and got rejected.

"You know, all I wanted was to be normal and now I am, I guess, and I kind of hate it. Is it the same for you?"

"I know and it sucks. I grew up hearing about all the amazing things mutant superheroes did and yet people always find a way to use it against them. It doesn't make sense, but I guess hate never does." Kamala sighs deeply. It does hurt her that it is this way. Her only comfort is really she and the people of her community are on the right side of things.

"A little? But, also the opposite. I always wanted to be more, but my idea of it used to be more meant being like everyone else. I should be blond, beautiful, and uncomplicated or something. Things changed obviously and more meant being the best me. I can still do that, but I miss... I don't know. Having the physical proof I changed?" Kamala laughs. She's making no sense. "The healing factor was amazing too. That I definitely hate going without."
