Because he doesn't expect the one man he's ever wanted to like him to notice him. He just never thought it was something that happened to him. Course it happens with an Oriental and someone like Goodnight. Not him. Definitely not some masculine Mexican like Vasquez.

He tenses then though, because for as far as he knows he was not there. He ran. Even though he knows there's something not right about it all, but what he knows and has not experienced, it makes him suspicious of what he did. Or didn't do.
