"I killed a ranger," he says. "He deserved it," is what he adds soon after because Vasquez will never be convinced that the man hadn't deserved the two gunshots that Vasquez put through him. He knows that he robbed and stole, but if people won't pay him enough or respect him, then he does what he has to do.
